"New Film Lab, Take One - Lights, Camera, Digital Literacy" - NYTimes.com

Wouldn't it be nice to see the Monaco Media Forum sponsor some projects like this one?

Online Spending Growth Slows Sharply Amid Economic Gloom - WSJ.com

In order for the so-called digital revolution to "succeed", it is inevitable that millions, if not billions, of people are going to have to "spend" a lot more money online whether they are paying to access something, paying to reach someone, or paying in some other way to cover the cost of innovation that brought us the "revolution" in the first place.

"Media Play Catch-Up To Lightning Pace Of News" - NPR

The challenge for all of us grows more and more daunting as the complexities of the world become more apparent, the sources of "content" increase, and the role of trusted intermediary - i.e., professional news media - seems to decline.

A good subject for debate at this year's Forum.

"Rupert Murdoch Has Potential" - Esquire

"World's press opposes Yahoo-Google advertising deal" - editorsweblog

"Should we allow Google to scan newspaper archives?" - forum4editors.com

"GlobalNews Enterprises :: Transforming the coverage of international news in the digital age."

This start-up does not provide any updates on its evolution on its website - although it does include any reference any other media make very quickly. In order to follow a little more of the mysterious story of its planning, here's a new blog launched by one of the two prominently promoted "founders". They appear to be looking for more money.

""Media and Democracy" forum participants mostly upbeat" - Poynter Online - Romenesko

This would be good to review for anyone planning to attend the Forum.

"Holy Cash Cow, Batman! Content Is Back at Time Warner" - NYTimes.com

Another good discussion item for this year's Forum!

"The Media Equation - All of Us, the Arbiters of News" - NYTimes.com

I wonder if there is any chance of getting David CARR to come to the Forum?

"Is Google a Media Company?" - NYTimes.com

A wonderful subject for some discussion at the Forum in November......

International Center for Journalists Awards Dinner

Alas, this highly worthwhile event in Washington, DC conflicts with the Monaco Media Forum this year. I encourage everyone who may attend the Forum to look at the International Center for Journalists website and to consider making a contribution to ICFJ in lieu of their attendance. In this way, it would be nice to think that the Forum participants were able to be a part of two events at the same time!

"Billboard Media & Money"

This conference occurs a month prior to the Monaco Media Forum. I hope it will be possible to draw on what is said in New York for the program in Monaco. Perhaps we can identify one or more people who attend both to share some of the thinking that comes out of the New York event with those who attend the Forum.

US presidential election and the media....

The Monaco Media Forum will take place this year just a few days after the presidential election in the United States. What a great opportunity this timing presents to the Forum to review how the media of the US - but also media around the world - dealt with this important event. How well did new technologies and new services serve the interests of the US, its voters and all of the people of the world affected by the outcome? I hope some time will be put aside for this discussion.

Salah Choudhury and the Prince Rainier II prize

This Wikipedia entry provides some rough background on the man who received the Prince Rainier II prize at last year's Monaco Media Forum. I do not know if he will be invited back this year. This is his rather odd newspaper always containing a flashing banner ad for a US Congressman (Mark KIRK, Republican-Illinois).
